Instagram, Facebook Pages and Groups, and Twitter

Facebook

Facebook is  an excellent tool to promote your library to the community and parents.  Librarians can post about upcoming book fair information or competitions going on. One librarian even posted the link where parents could shop online if they missed the event.  An ewallet can even be set up where parents can donate books to teacher’s classrooms.  It is also great to post events where volunteers have helped in the library in order to get more parents involved.  When the community and parents see how much effort and care the librarian puts forth in their library, they may want to volunteer time or donate needed items throughout the year.  These facebook posts are great because other librarians can follow them and get new ideas.

The only disadvantage I see with facebook is that it is not used by young kids, and teenagers rarely use it.  Your audience would generally be parents, other teachers or librarians, or people in the community.

Tried out Cinematic Mode on the iPhone 13 Pro this morning. I was climbing up a slope with over a foot of snow, so it is a little shaky. Wish I had my gimbal with me, but it is still cool!

Sharing their podcasts with peers gives students motivation to conduct research and develop skills they’ll need later to write essays.

Gwyneth Jones

Gwyneth Jones’s twitter account is full of library related posts.  She tweets about how a library should be a safe spot for all to enjoy.  I read several of her blog posts from The Daring Librarian.  She is very real and gives great advice about books, libraries, and even weeding books.  Many of her posts are about books and what she thought about them.  Some are about the top 25 books for the LGBTQ community.  She also posts free printables for teachers or librarians to use.

Instagram

This is a great social media source where you can connect with students, teachers, and other educators.  Many students have instagram and follow their teacher’s accounts if they have one strictly for school.  It is a great way to build a positive learning community. Teachers love to follow other educators on Instagram for teaching ideas and resources.  Many have a tab where they list a lot of free resources or a link to their lesson on teachers pay teachers website. There is also an option to tag posts where people can search by topics and many posts with that particular tag will show up.

Like facebook, Instagram attracts different audiences.  Many people that use facebook and have for years stick to this social media outlet.  They have an easy option to link both, but some people find it easier to keep up with one.  With this said, I think teachers and librarians will need several accounts in order to reach a wide range of audiences.

There are many benefits to this platform.  It is a place to learn, grow, and foster positive relationships.

A Novel Experience

  1. I absolutely love what you shared from TCEA on Twitter! How fun would a Chromebook Bingo activity be with students during that first week back to school while you are trying to make sure they are familiar with some of the basic functions of the Chromebook. I followed you on Instagram and love your highlight over bulletin board ideas. So many great ideas, thanks for sharing!
