Lesson Graphic Novels

Materials: Selection of graphic novels, pencils, graphic organizer

Lesson Objective:

Students will be able to identify the key elements of a graphic novel and understand the difference between graphic novels and traditional novels.


AASL Standard Framework for Learners

III A 2 Developing new understandings through engagement in a learning group.

Activity: Hook: Begin by asking students if they have ever read a graphic novel before, and if they know what the term means.  

Provide a brief definition of the term graphic novels highlighting key elements such as illustrations and text


Activity: Read a short excerpt from the graphic novel: 

Invite students to notice the different elements they see in this novel such as illustrations, captions, and speech bubbles.  

Compare the graphic novel to a traditional novel using chart paper.  


In groups, students will choose from several graphic novels at their table.  On a graphic organizer, they will write down the elements they see such as characters, the plot, and the setting, and theme.  


Students will share out 1 graphic novel that interested  them.  


Closing: Discuss with their group what they learned about graphic novels.
