AASL Standard Framework for Learners

III A 2 Developing new understandings through engagement in a learning group.

Activity:

  1. Begin the lesson by introducing the concept of a book tasting to the class. Explain that a book tasting is a fun way to sample a variety of books in a short amount of time.

  2. Arrange the classroom into several stations, each with a different book displayed on the table. Decorate the tables with tablecloths or placemats and set up small signs to identify each book.

  3. Divide the class into small groups and assign each group to a station.

  4. Give each student a note-taking sheet and explain that they will have a set amount of time to read the first few pages of each book and record their thoughts and impressions.

  5. Set a timer for 10-15 minutes and have students begin reading and taking notes.

  6. After the time is up, have each group rotate to a new station and repeat the process with a new book.

  7. Once all groups have visited each station, reconvene as a class and have students share their thoughts and impressions of each book. Encourage them to discuss what they liked and didn't like about each book, and share which books they would be interested in reading more of.

  8. Conclude the lesson by reminding students of the importance of reading for pleasure and encouraging them to check out books from the school library.

  9. Invite students to check out books that sounded interesting.

Closing: Students can check out books for the remainder of the time.
